Tibet Travel
The capital of Tibet, named Lhasa, meaning "Holy-Land," has a history of more then 1,300 years. It became the heart of administrative and religious importance during the 7th century A.D. At the time, a local ruler named Songtsen Gampo dedicated himself to the task of unifying Tibet. Songtsen Gampo moved his capital and built his palace in Lhasa. Lhasa was also chosen by the fifth Dalai Lama to be the site of his palace, the Potala. The Dalai Lama built the Potala on top of the ruins of Songtsen Gampo's seventh century palace. In 1642, Lhasa became the capital of Tibet and it is from this period that most of the current standing historical architecture dates. A trip to Tibet will take you to the city of Tsedang, the cradle of Tibetan Civilization and the site of Samye Monastery, the first Buddhist temple in Tibet. The region enjoys rich earth and fair weather that served to sustain the Tibet dynasty during its early generations and served as the home of Guru Rinpoche, the Indian monk that established Buddhism in the region. A visit to Yarlung Valley is not only a historic gateway to the birthplace of Tibet, but it is also a site of beautiful landscapes that will simply take the breath away. At Quest Tours, we offer trips to Tibet that will have a structure, but are also relaxed enough to allow participants to enjoy optional activities or relaxing time alone based on individual preferences. We have also had Tibet tours that included periods of meditation and other practices that allowed travelers to connect to these sacred places. We structure the tours around individual preference and do our best to make each trip uniquely memorable for every participant.
